There are some things every parent needs and every parent should avoid like the plague (so to speak). Parents.com has a great list of Baby Items You Can Live Without
The wipe warmer is probably the most laughable thing to live without followed by a diaper disposal system. Why pay for an over-glorified trash can?
I prefer to use dreft (I know, it is over-priced and expensive) for washing my LO's cloth diapers. Everything else is washed using Charlie's Laundry Soap. One way to wash clothes for the entire family (with the exception of the diapers, of course). If I used the tri-folds, I would eliminate the dreft completely because it is not needed. I actually have to wash many of the pocket diapers with detergent so absorption is maximized. It does not make sense - but I change my child's clothes more frequently when I wash the pocket diapers in laundry soap rather than detergent.
On Bassinets- I wish I never set up the pack-n-play in my room. What a waste of space and frustration! Just stick with the crib! I also co-slept with my newborn until she was 2 months old. Yes, I know it is not recommended but my sanity is important. Baby munching late at night with a sleeping mommy is easier than mommy getting up and feeding for 30 min or so every 2 hours.
I laugh at expensive crib bedding and bumpers now. Yes - I was one of those crazy people who wanted it all - until my DH said "Ikea." I spent less on my nursery furniture than people spend on a crib.
As for high chairs - I have a fast chair. I think the kid likes it. She can enjoy dinner with mom and dad and the chair is portable. Gotta love portability. Plus - I keep a stash of bibs and facecloths in the rear pocket. Supposedly kids make messes.
I was one of those crazy people who wanted the beaba babycook (ah, I live in my WS catalog) until I saw that the thing had BPA. My mini processor works fine as do blenders and the Baby Bullet that my dad and step-mother purchased for the family.
Oh - the diaper bag. Now I would love to have a Petunia Picklebottom bag ONLY because they are super trendy and come with a changing pad. But really, the price? I opted for a 31 Bag that could function as any bag. It can be wiped clean and has plenty of pockets. I think I paid around $60 for the bag sans monogram. The cheapest I saw on amazon.com was $15.
Alright... enough of the baby product for now :)
